Gloucester Individual Lightning Championships 2014 Takes Place on Thursday 18th December at Burlington House Cheltenham at 7:15pm. Entry fee £2, various prizes to be won for all levels of player. All welcome, please contact Nigel Hosken for any enquiries (email@example.com)
I have been out of the country recently and not been able to do much work updating the website. It should all be back in order now, please let me know of any discrepancies that need fixing.
I am sorry to report that Malcolm Wootton, Forest of Dean's longest serving member, died of a heart attack on 8th November. I am grateful to Ray Francis who informed me of the sad news. His cheerful attitude and enthusiasm for the game will be missed in the league. Malcolm's family have confirmed that the funeral will take place at the Gloucester Crematorium at 1530hrs on Wednesday 03 December 2014 and a buffet will follow at the Great Western where Malcolm used to wine and dine regularly. Jeannette and Pete (brother and sister-in-law) are handling the arrangements and would appreciate some idea of "numbers" so please let Ian Jenkins know if you are able to attend and he shall link up with Jeannette. Malcolm was well known to the chess community and was at least once the Chair of the League (when it was Forest of Dean's turn).
Anyone interested in playing the individual championships please ask your club secretary for an entry form, contact Rob Wilden or contact the website, as the first round is approaching.
New league season is underway, check for results updates each week.
New grades are out for this summer season, how did you do? Find out at The ECF Grading Database .
The summer league is over and, in a dramatic final match, Waterpistols manage to retain their lead and become this years champions. Thanks to all involved in organising the event this year.
Gloucestershire County AGM takes place on monday July 28th at the Stagecoach pub in Newport, Gloucestershire. Pat Baker is retiring as treasuerer after several years of dutiful service. This means that the county will be without anyone to manage the match fees (a simple job, but one of vital importance to the smooth running of the team) so anybody willing to step forward would be very gratefully received.
Summer League begins, for results please see the tournaments page.
Congratulations to Ian Robson, winner of the individual championship.
Congratulations to division winners: Div 1 Stroud A, Div 2 Wotton Hall B, Div 3 Rich's.
Division 2 second phase fixtures now available on the fixtures page.
Individual championship now up to date, also league results continue to be updated as they arrive. Please note that the new ratings are out now so will be used for this half of the season - be aware of such ratings for grade handicap competitions!
More Sad News for the league:
Ian Ponter sadly passed away on Sunday 1st December 2013 aged 41. Ian was educated in Gloucester and lived in Cheltenham. He played chess for Gloucester and later for Downend, Bristol and represented his county of Gloucestershire. He won the Major section at Frome in 2012 but had been in poor health for some years. Ian joined several of his friends at golf during many Paignton Chess Congresses. Ian will be sadly missed by his many friends.

09/09/13: The League AGM took place on friday september 6th at EDF, several changes to league play were made and a summary of those most relevent to players
and captains are listed below.
The length of the session will be 3 hours unless both captains agree on 2 1/2 hours, or one captain has a good reason for insisting on 2 1/2 hours.
The game will involve a quickplay finish, unless one of the players requests adjournment / adjudication (whether the opponent wants this or not). (previously: the game will involve adjournment / adjudication, unless one of the players requests a quickplay finish and the opponent is happy with this. In the case of an adjournment, the player who refused quickplay will be required to travel to his opponent.
For 3 hour sessions, the quickplay time control is 35 moves in 1 1/4 hours followed by 15 minutes quickplay finish, and the adjournment / adjudication time control is 42 moves in 1 1/2 hours followed by 7 moves every 15 minutes.

13/06/13: Sad news for the league, as two longstanding members have recently died, obituaries below:
I am very sorry to report that Ron Powis passed away on June 12th. I am grateful to Rob Wilden who informed of the sad news. John Harris reports Ron was a member of Stroud Chess Club for over 50 years and was a pillar of local chess. This year was the first Cotswold Congress at which he did not afficiate since 1967. We will miss him massively. May he rest in peace. Funeral is Monday 24th June @11am at St. Pauls Church, Whiteshill (Stroud)
I am sorry to inform you that Jesse Lord passed away yesterday. I am grateful to John Jones (Wotton Hall) for passing on the sad news. Jesse was in the original team of Upton St.Leonards (now moved to Wotton Hall ) in 2001. He was also a member of Gloucester Chess Club for a great many years. Many of his chess friends would not know that he was very keen on ballroom dancing. He will be sadly missed at chess evenings and tea dances. Jesse's funeral will be next Monday 17th June, 11.00 am at Upton St.Leonards Church, Upton St.Leonards. Many thanks to John Jones for the details. May he rest in peace.
As most of you know, Phil Dodwell is retiring after several years as County Match Captain, and his efforts to find a successor have so far been unsuccessful. As Controller of the WECU County Matches I would be very sorry to see any team disappear, let alone my own, and would like to be sure that no stone has been left unturned in efforts to keep it alive. Although the appointment will not be confirmed until the County AGM on 26 July, the WECU and the other County Captains would like to know as soon as possible whether a Gloucestershire team will exist next season, so if you think you could do the job, even as a candidate of last resort, please make yourself known now. (I shall be away most of June so please let another County Officer such as Phil or Pat or Kevin Markey know as well as me.) Please note that our area includes South Glos and Bristol North of Avon, so if you know of anyone who might be interested in running things from the Bristol end (or even starting a new team!) please sound them out. Thanks to Phil Dodwell for his efforts over the years. Phil Meade
29/05/13: Summer league is now into its second week with the results, as always, being very close.
21/05/13: After the final division 1 match, Gloucester emerge victorious and are crowned League champions for the first time in many years.
18/05/13: Wotton Hall B become division three champions - well done to them for a fine season!
17/04/13: Congratulations to Stroud B on crossing the finish line to win division 2, I am sure we will all look forward to having them in the top division next season. Division 1 and 3 are still heavily contested, and the winner will have to work hard not to slip up in the final games.
13/03/13: As the season draws near its finish there is no clear winner yet in any division. Gloucester are edging towards victory in division one but could still be caught by stroud, rooks or knights. In division two Stroud B have pulled away from the pack and have a comfortable lead going into the final games. In division three it still remains a four hourse race with Cirencester leading by two points there is still everything to play for.
10/02/13: All league tables now up to date. Competition remains close in all three divisions, leading towards an exciting finish to the season.
16/01/13: Happy new year to the faithful viewers of the website. The latest scores are now available, as well as a new page for the individual championship which can be found in the tournament section.
